Practice.

Is the art of drawing the sword from its scabbard (Nukituke)

Killing an opponent with one stroke of sword.(Kirituke)

Flipping blood from the blade(chiburi)

and returning the sword to its scabbard.(Noto)

 

Sword practice includes bowing ,drawing, parrying, cutting, and returning the sword to the scabbard.

The first step in leaning Iaido is to practices bowing,holding and moving the  unsharpened long sword (iaito).

standing, stepping, shuffling and pivoting.

 

The next step is traditional forms,known as" Kata".

Each form teaches principles about how to handle the sword correctly.

Many of the form listed in the following training schedule are hundreds of years old.

Many of people have practice these forms through the centuries.

Iaido holds a grate tradition.

 

Sword were primary weapons of the ancient Samurai (Japanese warrior class).

Training begins by leaning the cord of the Samurai (bushido)

and swoed etiquette (reisiki). Reishiki includes knowing how to bow (rei) in order to show respect to the art.

 

Kiso-iai.(Basic Toyama-ryu Iaido Forms.)

 

Kiso-iai styles practice it as the "cutting style of sixth".

You drawing the sword (iaito or katana) from its scabbard and hold your sword in both hands with the butt of the sword-handle head (tsukagasira) even with your waist and one fist away from your body.(chudan-no-kamae).

Point the sword tip of the blade (kissaki) at an imagenary opponent throlt.

Each direction 3 steps forward and you can attack it

 

1. Ippon-me (first attack) makkou-giri

 

The first attack is vertically cutting up to down (makkou-giri).

Raise your sword sbouve your head as you step forward with your right foot and cut straight down the katana.

 

2. Nihon-me (2nd attack) morote-tuki

 

The second attack is the twe-handed thrust (mrote-tuki).

Assume a chudan-no-kamae position. Shuffle your feet forward and life the handle to the middle of your chest.

Continue to move forward and thrust your sword at your imaging opponent's throat.

 

3. Sanbon-me (3rd attack) migi-kesagiri

 

The third attack is to cut down from upper right side to left.(migi-kesagiri)

Step foword with your right foot as your raise the katana.

 

4. Yonhon-me (4th attack) hidari-kesagiri

 

The fourth attack is to cut down across from upper left side to right (hidari-kesagiri)

Step forward with your left foot as your raise the katana sboube your head at the right side and slash the blade diagonally down to your left side.

 

5. Gohon-me (5th attack) suriage & hidari-kesagiri

 

The fifth attack is two handed thrust by opponent.

You step back and ward off an opponent sword by your sword-side.Then ,to cut down across from upper left side to right(migi-kesa-giri)

 

6. Roppone-me (6th attack) suriotosi, makkou-giri

 

The sixth attack were two.

First attack is brak down an opponent sword.

And second attack is vertically cutting up to down (makkou-giri).

 

After each attacked, taking five short steps backward from the left leg.

And chiburi, noto.

 

 

 

Hon-Iai.

 

These eight attacks are all two actions.

1st attack is drawing the sword from it's scabbard. (nukituke),

2nd attack is killing as opponent with one stroke of the sword. (kirituke)

 

1. Ippon-me : Attack to your front.

 

The 1st attack is cut up across from lower left to upper right with one hand. (gyakukesa-giri) and 2nd attack is vertically cutting up to down (makkou-giri) with both hands.

 

2. Nihon-me : Attack to you right.

 

The 1st attack is cut horizontally from the left side with one hand.(suihei-giri) 

Draw your sword to your left side Swing the sword in horizontal slashing action from left to right.Twist your hip into the cutting motion. 2nd attack is makkou-giri with both hand, too.

 

3. Sanbon-me : Attack to you left.

 

The 1st attack is one-handed thrust (katate-tsuke) to you left side. And 2nd attack is ward off with one hand. And, cutting from upper right side to left.(migi-kesa-giri)

 

4. Yonhon-me : Attack to you back.

 

The 1st attack is turn round clockwise. Drawing a sword and cut down across from upper left side to right with one hand. (hidari-kesa-giri) and 2nd attack is makkou-giri with both hands.

 

5. Gohon-me : Attack to your forward.

 

The 1st attack is vertically cutting up to down (makkou-giri) with both hands. and 2nd attack is both handed thrust. (morote-tuki)

 

6. Roppon-me : Attack to your back and forward

 

In case of suddenly attack by the back opponent as facing the forward opponent.

sword off (ukenagasi) the attack from back opponent and cut down from upper right side to left.(migi-kesa-giri), soon, turning round counterclockwise at no step. And cut down makkou-giri with both hands. When the finish makkou-giri, left foot is forward position. then, step right foot forward. and chuudan-no-kamae.

 

7. Nanahon-me : Attack to you left, right and forward.

 

The 1st attack is cutting down to the right opponent by hidari-kesa-giri with one hand.And turning round counterclockwise 1nd attack to the left opponent cutting down by migi-kesa-giri with both hand. and 3rd attack for forward opponent to two-handed thrust (morote-tuki). Assume a Jyodan-no-kamae and chudan-no-kamae.

 

8. Hachihonn-me : Attack to your forward

 

The five consecutive attacks to you forward opponent.

1st attack is migi-kesa-giri, and 2nd attack is hidari-kesa-giri and 3rd attack is hidari-kesa-giri, and 4th attack is migi-kesa-gake and 5th attack is makkou-giri.

 

 

 

Happou-nuki.

 

Happo-nuki is Toyama-Ryu Iaido practice styles is as the "cutting style of eight direction".

 

1. Ippon-me : Attack to you front.

 

The first attack is cut up across from lower left to upper right with one hand. (gyaku-kesa-giri)

 

2. Nihon-me : Attack to your right

 

the second attack is cut horizontally from the left side with one hand.(suihei-giri) Draw your sword to you left side Swing the sword in a horizontal slashing action from left to right. Twist your hip into the cutting motion.

 

3. Sanbon-me : Attack to your left.

 

The third attack is one-handed thrust (katate-tuki) to you left side.

 

4. Yonhon-me : Attack to your back.

 

The fourth attack is turn round clockwise. Drawing a sword and cut down across from upper left sight to right (hidari-kesa-giri) with one hand.

 

5. Gohon-me : Attack to your forward.

 

The fifth attack is vertically cutting up to down.(makkou-giri) with both hands.

 

6. Roppon-me : Attack to your left

 

The sixth attack to the left opponent cutting down by migi-kesa-giri with both hands.

 

7. Nanahon-me : Attack to your right.

 

The seventh attack is cutting down to the right opponent by hidari-kesa-gake with both hands.

 

8. Hachihonn-me : Attack to your back

 

The eighth attack to the sword off (ukenagasi) the attack from back opponent and cut down from upper right side to left. (migik-kesa-giri).
